Today was our best day so far. Back roads devoid of traffic through impressive neighborhoods. Many bicyclists were out riding and as I was thinking about how they are like race horses, passing us by without effort as we plod along like heavily laden donkeys, a cyclist dressed to the tees nodded to me and cruised up to ride next to Christof, curious to hear where we were going.

There was an interesting mix of people, including a group of difficult looking teenagers, breakfasting in front of the TV in the lobby alcove of the hotel. During checkout, loud cries reached our ears from the next room, and the receptionist, seeing our puzzled expressions, explained that a team of sales people were having their motivational morning rally.

We were up early enough to be out for a few hours in the cool morning air before the heat of the day hits, which makes riding strenuous and unpleasant.

After taking leave of John and Lauren, we rode along the rural roads of New Jersey, on the route suggested by John last night. We enjoyed a ride through pastoral country scenes, green rolling fields, white-fenced pastures filled with grazing horses, ripening crops, a county fair advertising 4 H events and animal competitions, and roads dotted with abundant farm stands. An enormous contrast to the hectic traffic and high paced energy of Long Island.
