Up early and off by 8:30 crossing another three-mile bridge, where people of all ages sat companionably with their legs dangling off the edge of it, fishing in the early morning sunshine.

An early breakfast in the only open café in town. Elisabeth City has beautiful buildings and passages from yesteryear, but the energy is gone, drained out and syphoned off by malls, leaving the few brave merchants struggling in what has become a half-deserted ghost town. After spending the night at the KOA near Charlottesville, we drove towards the Blue Ridge Parkway. At a visitors’ center we explained that we only had a day to get an impression of the area, and didn’t want to spend it in the car. [Read more…]
