Hana and Andy come to say goodbye. Andy shows us a solar-powered battery charger and before we know it he has given it to us.
We thank him. He says he wants our journey to be a success. We will be able to keep the iPad charged in Asia where electricity is less common than in the United States. We are touched by this unexpected generosity. [Read more…]

We leave the tent cover off so that we can see the enormous star-filled dome during the night. Without the cover on, it is bitter cold and we wake up shivering and frozen through. There are scorpions in the desert and we need to either take our shoes into the tent or – if we leave them outside as we have been doing – to shake them out before stepping into them in the morning. Christof woke up this morning with the idea of returning our rental car in Las Cruces, New Mexico, thus avoiding hours spent going back and forth over the same territory, first driving backwards to the airport in El Paso, and then retracing the same route again by bicycle through heavy urban traffic. After breakfast we drive 75 kilometers to the Santa Elena Canyon Overlook, which provides easy access to a view of the Rio Grande. A trickle of water meanders through its dry riverbed.

In the dining area of the motel I see someone eating French Toast. I look around for a frying pan, bread and some beaten eggs. All the motels we have been at have had batter and a waffle iron. The guest eating the French toast steers me towards a pile of cold French Toast in a covered glass bowl and points to the micro wave oven. I stare at the closed machine and feel as though I am from another planet. [Read more…]
