We’ve been lucky with the weather. There were strong rains during the night but they stopped shortly before we needed to pack up. Today was disappointing, at first we couldn’t find the key to unlock our bikes, so the mosquitoes had a field day while we were looking for it. Although we rode all day, in an unproductive zig- zag, hoping to avoid heavy traffic – on Labor Day – it felt as though we hardly made any progress.

A great ride from Washington to Mt. Vernon on a bike path imaginatively named the Mt. Vernon Trail. Being Sunday morning, there was a lot of athletic activity on the trail: joggers, dog walkers and cyclists out moving their bodies.

We will spend three nights and two days in Washington. Impossible to give more than a scant impression of the wealth of the Smithsonian collections.

Today was our best day so far. Back roads devoid of traffic through impressive neighborhoods. Many bicyclists were out riding and as I was thinking about how they are like race horses, passing us by without effort as we plod along like heavily laden donkeys, a cyclist dressed to the tees nodded to me and cruised up to ride next to Christof, curious to hear where we were going.
